Bone Health

Osteoporosis, which means “porous bones,” is a preventable and treatable disease that thins and weakens bones, making them fragile and more likely to break.  The National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) estimates as many as eight million women and two million men in the United States have osteoporosis.

Research has found that bisphosphonates, the drugs most often prescribed for Osteoporosis offer only modest benefits in building bone and preventing fractures. And all pose risks. Growing evidence has now linked the drugs to a long list of worrisome side effects. Drugs used to slow Osteoporosis are designed to stop the body from removing old bone cells.  This causes brittle bones, meaning a hard shell is built up on the bone and the inside of the bone is still as weak as it was when the medication was first taken.  Exploring alternatives to medications presents us with options to consider.

Modalities available to support bone health at Healthy Spaces:

  • Pulsed ElectroMagnetic Field Therapy – PEMF has proven effective in healing non-union fractures and stimulates the formation of new bone with documented benefits in osteoporosis and arthritis.
  • Whole Body Vibration – An alternative weight-bearing exercise that can either be active or passive depending on the health of the participant. A recent search on pubmed.gov reflects 71 studies discussing the potential benefits of mechanical vibration for bone health.
